千
数詞としての基本語で、hundred（百）や million（百万）と同様に単独でも a thousand としても使う。複数の意味では thousands of A（何千ものA）という形を取る。

起源は不詳だが、ゲルマン祖語 *þūsundī「大きなまとまり」にさかのぼり、後半部は *hundą「百」に関連するとされる → 古英語 þūsend → 英語 thousand。「百のさらに大きなまとまり」から、千を意味する。
