orient は進む方向や考え方を定めること。direct は向きを示す、guide は案内するが、orient は位置関係や目標に合わせて向きを決める点が違う。be oriented toward A で「Aに向いている」。orient oneself（自分の位置を確かめる）も頻出。

ラテン語 oriens「昇る，東」← oriri「昇る」→ 英語 orient。「日の昇る方角（東）に向ける」から、方向づけることを意味する。
