misconstrue は言葉や行為の意味を取り違える硬い語。misunderstand は一般的な誤解、misinterpret は解釈を誤る、misread は状況を読み違える。受動で用いられ、意図が誤解される場面に多い。

古英語 mis-「誤って」＋ ラテン語 con-「共に」＋ struere「積み上げる」→ construere「組み立てる」→ 英語 construe → misconstrue。「誤って組み立てる」ことから、誤って解釈することを意味する。
