inconsistent は内容が矛盾して一貫しない、incompatible は共存・併用できないこと。機器やソフトで互換性がない意にも使う。unsuited は適さない。

ラテン語 in-「〜でない」＋ com-「共に」＋ pati「苦しむ，耐える」→ 中世ラテン語 compati → incompatibilis「共存できない」→ 英語 incompatible。「共に耐えられない」から、両立しないことを意味する。
