explanatory は説明の役目をもつこと。descriptive は様子を描く、illustrative は例で示す点が違い、explanatory は理由や仕組みを明らかにする。self-explanatory は『説明不要の』の意。

ラテン語 ex-「完全に」＋ planare「平らにする」(planus「平らな」) → explanare「平らにして明らかにする」→ explanatio → 英語 explain → explanatory。「でこぼこを平らにして分かりやすくする」から、説明のための、を意味する。
