cognitive は認知の過程を指すのに対し、epistemic は知識の根拠や正当化を問う哲学用語。epistemic modality は must や may が話者の確信度を表す用法を指す。

ギリシャ語 epi-「上に」＋ histasthai「立つ」→ epistasthai「理解する」→ epistēmē「知識」→ 英語 epistemic。「物事の上に立って把握する」から、知識に関することを意味する。
