dissertation は主に博士論文、thesis は修士論文を指すことが多い（英国では逆になることもある）。paper は雑誌や授業用の一般的な論文。

ラテン語 dis-「別々に」＋ serere「並べる，つなぐ」→ dissertare「詳しく論じる」→ dissertatio → 英語 dissertation。「順序立てて論じたもの」から、学位論文を意味する。
