discovery は未知のものを「見つけ出す」広い意味を持つが、detection は機器や手法を用いて存在・異常を「検知する」より技術的な行為を指す。

ラテン語 de-「覆いを取って」＋ tegere「覆う」→ detegere「覆いを取って明らかにする」→ detectio → 英語 detection。「隠れていたものの覆いを取る」ことから、検出・発見を意味する。
